Greenhouse Gas Emissions Summary Report

In the 2007 period, BMO Financial Group's total reported emissions were 165,113 tonnes CO2 equivalent (tCO2e). BMO emitted 96,049 tCO2e from electricity consumption and 50,922 tCO2e from the consumption of natural gas and other fuels. Electricity consumption accounted for 58.2% of the total emissions, whereas natural gas and other fuel consumption accounted for 27.5% and 3.3%, respectively.

The reported emissions arising from energy consumption are enterprise-wide and account for energy consumed by all BMO operations in Canada and the United States, as well as our international operations.

Emissions associated with fleet were 2,632 tCO2e accounting for 1.6% of total emissions, whereas ground travel and air travel accounted for 2.5% and 6.9%, respectively. These emissions relate to our North American operations only.

BMO’s GHG emissions are categorized in accordance with the “scopes” identified by the GHG Protocol. Emissions estimates account for 44.8% of the total data reported and we are confident that the estimation techniques used provide a conservative, defensible, referential and reasonable estimation of energy consumption in the absence of actual data.

The Carbon Disclosure Project

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an ongoing effort to enhance the level and quality of carbon emissions disclosure from publicly traded corporations. A growing number of Institutional Investors want to know what companies are doing to mitigate and manage their contribution to increased greenhouse gases and in turn global warming.
